Except for the salt water marsh portion to your north, the entire Elfin Forest sits on sand dunes that have been stabilized by native vegetation.  These low-growing shrubs, grasses and wildflowers thrive in the nutrient-poor sand.  Without vegetation, the dunes would undergo constant reshaping, or would simply just blow away, and you'd be standing in saltwater right now.
